to talk turkey
Вести деловую беседу; говорить по делу, прямо, начистоту, без обиняков. Существует несколько версий происхождения этого выражения. Может быть, оно возникло из попытки охотников на диких индюков привлечь свою добычу, имитируя кулдыканье этих птиц. Тогда птицы появлялись или откликались, тем самым выдавая себя. Согласно другой версии, во время колонизации Америки the Pilgrim Fathers («отцы-пилигримы», первые английские поселенцы, прибывшие в Америку в 1620 г.) часто в обмен на свой товар требовали индюков у индейцев, и индейцы нередко приветствовали их словами: 'You come talk turkey?'. Есть ещё одна история, но менее правдоподобная, однако более колоритная. Однажды белокожий охотник договорился с краснокожим разделить пополам всё, что они добудут в течение дня. К сожалению, им удалось застрелить только трёх ворон и двух индюков. Белокожий отдал индейцу ворону, а себе взял индюка, вторую ворону тоже отдал индейцу, а себе снова взял индюка. В этот момент индеец заметил: 'You talk all turkey for you. Only talk crow for Indian'. Пример современного употребления этого выражения:
